YYSI/FAQ

Straight answers about the renaming

The questions everyone is typing into search, answered once — sourced, and with the jokes kept clearly separate from the facts.

Did the U.S. government really rename “AI” to “SI”?

Yes. Executive Order 14434, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” was signed on September 29, 2026. It directs the executive branch to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.” The phrase debuted at the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2026.

What does SI stand for?

Super Intelligence. Federal documents now read “Super Intelligence — SI” where they previously read “Artificial Intelligence — AI.”

Is it illegal to say “artificial intelligence”?

No. The order governs official federal usage, not private speech or private companies. Nobody is fined for saying “AI.” Renaming is compliance-flavored branding, not law — for now.

When did the change take effect?

The term debuted at the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2026. EO 14434 was signed on September 29, 2026. Federal agencies have been replacing terminology on a rolling basis since early October — track the progress here.

Do I have to rename my AI product?

Not legally. There is no requirement for private products today, though federal contractors may see the new terminology in RFPs and contract language. The branding pressure, however, is real. The Product Name Converter generates compliant name variants.

What is AGI called now?

Provisionally “GSI — General Super Intelligence.” Widely used informally, pending formal guidance.

What is the difference between AI and SI?

Officially, none — it is the same technology with a new name. Unofficially, analysts note the rebrand re-frames the technology’s ambitions from “artificial” (imitation) to “super” (surpassing).

Does the rename apply outside the United States?

Not formally. Foreign governments are not bound by the executive order, and most of the world still says “AI.” The UN speech made it a global talking point, and the tracker watches how usage spreads.

Where can I read Executive Order 14434?
