SI Rename Watch: What Changed This Week

The October 20, 2026 edition: a dated SI Challenge announcement, continued AI terminology at the IMF, and separately labeled NASA observations.

Edition 01 · October 20, 2026. Reporting window: October 13–19, 2026. Page observations made on October 20 are labeled separately. This is a sourced selection, not an exhaustive list of all changes.

October 13: SI appears in the Presidential Challenge name

The White House published an announcement of the 2027 Presidential SI Challenge and a First Lady Seal of SI Readiness. The announcement invites students, educators, and schools to participate and directs readers to SI.Gov.

Why it matters — YYSI analysis: a named public initiative gives readers a concrete example of SI usage beyond the executive order. We can establish the announcement’s publication date. That does not establish when every associated website, link, or application form was updated.

October 16: an IMF event still uses AI

The IMF’s “AI and the Global Economy: From Risk to Opportunity” event page lists an October 16 session and describes the technology using artificial intelligence. This is evidence that the earlier terminology remains in use in an international policy setting.

Why it matters — YYSI analysis: the federal rename should not be read as a worldwide switch. This event title is a specific observation, not a measurement of global adoption or evidence of a dispute over the event’s wording.

Observed October 20: NASA’s SI topic page

On our verification date, NASA’s technology topic page uses Super Intelligence in its explanatory content and explicitly references the September 29 directive. Older linked article titles still include AI.

Timing limit: we do not have a verified before-and-after capture establishing that this wording changed during October 13–19. We are therefore recording it as a current observation, not a new event in this week’s window. A page’s displayed update date is also not a complete history of individual edits.

What has not been established by these examples

These sources do not show a completed switch across every federal agency, a universal corporate rebrand, a requirement for all private businesses to use SI, or a new technical benchmark being reached. We will not infer any of those conclusions from a program title or a phrase count.

Our tracker changed, too

YYSI now presents page-level wording observations with linked sources and check times. It no longer turns a homepage phrase count into an organization-wide “RENAMED” or “RENAMING” verdict. This is a change to our reporting method, separate from the external events above.

What we will check next

We will look for new agency announcements, dated implementation instructions, and independently verifiable page changes. The order’s request for proposed legislative language within 60 days is also a document to watch; a request for a proposal does not itself amend a statute. See section 3 of the order.
